Wynona Margarette Davis

June 16, 1930 – August 26, 2015

Wynona Margarette Davis was born on June 16, 1930, to Jasper Newton Brannan and Laura Leona (Lemon) Brannan in Atoka, Oklahoma.  She passed away at home on Wednesday, August 26, 2015, in Grand Junction, Colorado, surrounded by loving family.  She was 85 years old.

She met Freddie Allen Davis at a dance in the hills of Oklahoma, a relationship that became a marriage on November 29, 1944 in Talihina, Oklahoma.  She and Freddie lived in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, and Colorado. Most of Wynona’s life was spent trying to make life good for her family, occasionally working outside the home in various jobs as the need arose.

Wynona is survived by 2 daughters, Betsy (Davis) Sorter and Judy Davis of Grand Junction;

grandson Dane Sorter and wife Paula, and 2 children, Andy and Kaylee, of Casper, Wyoming;
granddaughter Julie (Sorter) Karassik and husband Nishan, and 2 children, Niko and Calder, of Portland, Oregon;
granddaughter Rachel (Sorter) Cochran and husband Adam, and 4 children, Joel, Allen, Beth, and Eli, of Grand Junction;
granddaughter Crystal (Sorter) Brickey and husband Glenn, and 4 children, Wendy, Lianah, Garion, and Hyland, of Grand Junction;
grandson Ari Armstrong and wife Jennifer, and 1 child, Quin, of Westminster, Colorado;
grandson Brannan Davis and Stephanie, and 2 children, Conor and Jane, of Ft. Collins, Colorado;
grandson Chad Davis and Erin, and 3 children, Addison, Nora, and Marshall, of Grand Junction;
granddaughter Desi (Davis) Collins and husband Andy, and 4 children, Owen, Noah, Miles, and Emmeline, of Grand Junction;
granddaughter Chandra (Sheridan) Proffitt and husband Jeremiah, and 2 children, Paden and Lillian, of Powderhorn, Colorado;
granddaughter Shelby Sheridan of Denver, Colorado; and
many dear nieces and nephews, and other loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Freddie, her son, Marshall,  her sisters, Luvada, Vera, Birtie, and Janice, and her brother, Sonny.

She will be remembered for many things.  Her passion for her children and grandchildren.  Her reputation as the “white tornado.”  Moving an upright piano by herself.  Taking a flyswatter to certain bottoms if they sassed or ignored her.  Big gardens with mountains of corn to be cut off the cob.  Buying that ugly, orange-and brown-flowered Formica dining set and then hating it for the next 15 years.  Doublemint gum.  Sending little valentines to the grandkids.  Chocolate chip cookies always in the freezer and ready to be warmed in the microwave if you dropped by.  Big family dinners with delicious comfort food.  Famous for homemade noodles and beef stroganoff.  Saying “I’d rather be outside any day than inside doing housework,” but doing housework anyway.  Adamant about no dogs in the house, yet becoming so enamored with sweet little Angel, housedog and Wynona’s buddy--the dog meant to help her through these last difficult times.

A private gathering of her family will honor her passing.  Remembrance contributions may be made to HopeWest in Grand Junction.  Our gratitude goes out to family, friends, and the HopeWest staff who made the final stage of her earth journey so much easier.
