Alton “Al” Franklin Marlowe Jr. was born in Dallas, Texas, to Alton Franklin Marlowe Sr. and Elenor Eloise (Painter) Marlowe. Al passed away on November 29, 2020 at Mesa Manor Center in Grand Junction, Colorado at the age of 82. Al was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Rosalie Marlowe-Vogler of Meridian, Idaho. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Marlowe, and their beloved Golden Retrievers Ted E Bear and Emmy Lou of Grand Junction, Colorado, his children; Karl and his wife Laurie of Reno, Nevada, Karol and her husband Alan Thomson of Albion, Washington.
Al and Jean got married in 1960 and they had 2 children, Karl and Karol. They initially lived in Dallas, Texas, and moved to Lakewood, Colorado in 1963. Later homes included Evergreen and Grand Junction, Colorado. Decades of outdoor adventures were mixed into their lives. Al felt completely at home on a trout stream, hiking in the Flat Tops and San Juan Mountains or hunting deer, elk, grouse and ducks throughout the mountains of Western Colorado.
He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Dallas and Littleton, Colorado, for more than 15 years. He earned a B.Sc. in Geology from Metropolitan State College in 1982 while working for Amoco Production Company. Having a geology degree and working in the boom-bust oil industry, he soon found the need to follow his love of the outdoors by becoming a freelance writer. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and a talented photographer and writer. He authored and co-authored several hiking, fly fishing and camping articles and guidebooks, including the first hiking guide to Colorado’s Flat Tops Wilderness area.
Al’s family gratefully acknowledges HopeWest Hospice services, especially Walter and Miguel for their kind care and attention to both Al and Jean over the last nine months of Al’s life.
As per Al and Jean’s wishes, there will not be a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Al’s name to Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies, 15350 W. 72nd Ave., Arvada, CO 80007. https://www.goldenrescue.com.
