Bela Mecseri

December 30, 1939 — March 19, 2021

Bela Mecseri, 81 of Basalt, passed away of natural causes on March 19, 2021 at

St. Mary’s Hospital, in Grand Junction, CO.

Bela was born in 1939 in Hungary and grew up with his parents and siblings in a small town near Budapest. Life was tough compared to what we are accustomed to today and with the Hungarian Revolution going on it made things even tougher. At age 16 Bela was determined to find a better life for himself. In planning his journey to immigrate, his preference was to go to the United States but that wasn’t a workable option at the time so he made plans to go to Australia. He made it out of his country and stayed in a refugee camp for almost a year before he immigrated to Australia along with many other immigrants. Once in Australia he trained to become a machinist and secured work at a small ski area in Southeastern Australia. This is also where he met his wife Joan, from the United States. By this time he had been in Australia for almost 10 years. He and Joan married and made their way to the United States in 1967. He obtained work after writing a letter of application and being accepted at a ski resort in Eastern California. This was also the year their first child (a son) was born. They stayed here until 1969, also the year that their second child (a daughter) was born.

From there Bela looked for and found work in Aspen, Colorado where he worked for the Aspen Ski Company for 43 years. This is where Bela and Joan raised their family and enjoyed many years of skiing, traveling, and exploring the country that he had always dreamed of living in. It was a wonderful life, full of adventure and good times.

Bela is survived by his wife, son (his wife), daughter (her husband), a granddaughter, two grandson’s, sister’s (their families), a brother (his family) and a sister-in-law. We all love and miss him very much. May his soul rest in peace.
