Doug Smith, age 85, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2023 at his home in Fruita, Colorado. Doug was born on January 19, 1938 in Grand Junction, Colorado to parents Dale Wilder and Eada Irene Smith. He was raised by his parents on a farm in Appleton on 24 Road along with his four siblings.
After graduating from Fruita High School, he served two years in the Marine Corp as a jet mechanic at El Toro Marine Base in California. After his Marine tour, he started his farming career with his dad. Doug's first residence was the Neuman Farm on 24 Road, where he raised his family with his wife Penny whom he was married to for 21 years. His second career was a ranch foreman for Double X Ranches. Lastly, he found a career in real estate selling farms and ranches.
Doug enjoyed teaching his kids to ride horses, compete in 4-H and rodeos. He was known for his willingness to help others and touched many lives with his kindness and generosity.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents and sister Sharon Marsh. He is survived by his brother Don (Kathy), sisters Bonnie Powell and Kathleen Williams (Mike), brother in-law Dan Marsh, son David (Jeannine), daughters Kristi Tubbs and Audre (Jack) Datz. His grandchildren Tyler (Kirsten) Smith, Ryan (Sara) Smith, Gustin and Ryder Tubbs, Madison and Austin Datz, great grandchildren Kimber and Kannon Smith and Layla Tubbs as well as many nieces and nephews.
Doug's family would like to thank longtime family friend Randy Gale for helping with his care and also the many doctors and nurses at the Grand Junction VA Medical Center.
Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Crown Point Cemetery on July 7, 2023 at 10am
