Del was known to say “I’ve had a great life.” And indeed he did, living to celebrate his 100th Flag Day birthday! He was the second of 4 sons born in Wisner, Nebraska to Carl and Amanda Spoering and was raised on a ranch in the Sand Hills near Bassett. Growing up during the Great Depression, he learned how to live in a practical and frugal manner, which he continued throughout his life. Del served in the Army during WWII, and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. After the war he married Mardelle Nunnenkamp and they had 3 children - an infant son Gerald who died at birth, Cheryl and Craig. He worked in building material sales for most of his career, including over 30 years in Topeka, KS at Whelan’s lumber. Del was a quiet, gentle and giving person, whose life revolved around his family and friends. He loved spending holidays, birthdays, graduations, weddings and other special events with family, which included 4 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, as well as a large extended family. He was a long-time member of Countryside Methodist Church in Topeka, member and president of the Southwest Optimist club, and volunteer at Let’s Help food kitchen. He was a golfer and an avid sports fan who loved the KC Royals and rarely missed basketball and football games at Washburn Univ. in Topeka. Del lived in Grand Junction, CO near his son for the last 3 years of his life. His parents, brothers, wife, infant son and his daughter preceded him in death. The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff of the Community Living Center at the VA Medical Center for loving and providing care for Delmar over his last year.
Memorial contributions may be made to Let’s Help (letshelpinc.org) in Topeka.
A family graveside memorial service is being planned.
