Don L. McGuire Jr. of Grand Junction, Colorado passed away June 23, 2018 at 6:45 am at the Colorado State Veteran’s Home in Rifle, Colorado. He was 77 years of age. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean McGuire, his sister Shirl McGuire Belden, his two children, Don L McGuire III the husband to Camia McGuire of Grand Junction and Linette Valles, wife of Thomas Valles of Rifle, Colorado. Don has five grandchildren: Noland Keeney, Logan Keeney, Tia Valles, Isaac Valles and Kiernan McGuire. He has one great grandchild, Avery Keeney of Grand Junction.
Don Jr. was born January 1, 1941 in Hallettsville, Texas to Don L. McGuire Sr. and Peggy McGuire. In 1944, the family moved to Grand Junction where Don grew up and graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1959. Immediately after High School he enlisted in the Service in 1959 where he was accepted into the Naval School of Music and then served in the US Army as a paratrooper until he was honorably discharged in 1962.
Vocationally, Don Jr had three primary careers after his military service. First, in 1969, he became a member of the Grand Junction Fire Department where he served the Grand Junction and surrounding areas for 23 years. After his retirement in 1992 as Lieutenant of the department, he pursued full-time ministry through the Federation of Churches and Ministers where he served both in local churches and abroad as an evangelist in countries such as Malaysia, India, London, and Africa among others. Lastly, from 2005 to 2017, Don worked as a security professional working a variety of assignments in the Grand Valley.
Don Jr. enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He loved motorcycles and classic cars and going shooting in the dessert with his family. However, Don Jr. was best known for his love to worship God in music by playing his saxophone, keyboard, and singing. Don’s work as a minister in and out of the local church, along with the trips taken to reach people all over the world and sharing their stories with others brought so much joy and purpose to his life. Lastly, Don’s love of martial arts endured through his adult life, earning him multiple belts in various styles and disciplines. Don enjoyed everyone who taught and sparred with him. He was very proud to earn a second degree black belt at the age of 76.
