Harold “Hal” Sheppard, 87, went peacefully to the loving arms of The Lord on February 18 2018 at the HopeWest Hospice Care Center in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Hal was born on March 30, 1930 to Harold and Gladys Sheppard in Marietta Ohio. He was a graduate of Marietta High School. He shared happy and loving memories about growing up with his large wonderful family. He especially loved visiting them all in summer and for every July 4th Casto Family reunion. He missed and had much love for his Ohio family, sisters Kay Bloomingdale and Peggy Herron.
After his graduation he enlisted in the Air Force, where he served for 4 years. He was extremely proud to serve our country.
After meeting at a USO dance, he married Mary Routzon, and had four children. They later divorced.
Hal worked for the Denver Post for 30 yrs in the circulation department where he helped young workers to learn and appreciate hard work. He retired and lived in Denver until 1998 when he moved to live in Grand Junction making his home with his daughter Ellen and son-in-law Jeff. He continued working hard becoming the CEO of feeding, fence mending, and playing veterinarian to hunting horses, dogs, mules and anything that wondered in. He had a gentle, kindness in his care of all living things.
His love of hobbies, Horseshoes, Bowling and Goodwill shopping earned him another job, he was President of the Colorado Horseshoe Pitching association for 8+ yrs. He bowled 2 nights/ week until his eyesight from macular degeneration made it difficult.
Hal was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ross, and his youngest daughter Christine. He is survived by his daughter Theresa Whiter of Eaton’s Neck, NY. Ellen (Jeff) of Grand Junction and son Mark of Denver, Co. He is survived by 9 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren.
Hal will be remembered for his love of family, he valued them and shared kindness, generosity, respect and living a simple life with smiles and laughter.
A celebration in his honor will be held at Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado at 2830 Riverside Parkway on Monday February 26, 2018 at 1:00 pm.
