Pamela Roberts was born January 22, 1947 to her Birth Mom, Virginia Roberts, in Denver, Colorado. (Hey - I thought this was about Iris Pangborn Moore!) She was adopted by Harry & Mildred Pangborn and brought home to Delta, CO on Valentine's day - 2/14/47.
God has saved Iris from physical death at least 4 times. Her birth mom wanted to poof her away, but her doctor dad told her she was young (17) and healthy. Have the child and if you still do not want it, have someone adopt it. God provided a special help - Harry & Mildred had friends in Denver who knew the doctor in charge of the orphanage in Denver. So, they hurried over to Denver and took one look and wanted the baby girl! Valentine's Day was very special to Mildred and she finally told Iris when she was 24. Now she knew why her Mom made so much ado about Valentine's Day!
Iris had a wonderful extended family with Maternal Grandparents (Ralph & Sabra Atlanta Goswick, brother, Donnie, and Aunt & Uncle and cousins - Wayne, Fern, Lois & Byron Goswick. Also another Aunt & Uncle and cousin - Truman, Iris & Kenny Pugh. Who all but Byron proceeded Iris in death. Those remaining (and very very sad she is gone) are husband Sherman, sons, Steven & Robert, adopted son, Craig Bradshaw, her favorite son (joking) Boots "the cat", cousin Byron and cousin in law Uncle Steve Elsmore, cousin Dick and wife Gaye Pangborn and other cousins and step-sisters in-law. Extended family - Robert's fiance Wendy, her parents, Marvin & Linda Sikes. Plus so many others she cared for from the comic book store her sons run.
Iris and Lois went to a Quacker church camp one summer and then began having daily devotionals which they would share. After Iris moved to Delta, they wrote each other every day sharing what they had studied in their Bibles. We all celebrated birthdays, Mother's Day, Father's Days, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and many other times.
When Iris was 2 or 3, Mom was dust mopping the bedroom floor upstairs. The window opened from the floor like a door. Either Iris went over to the window and leaned on the screen or she stepped out of the 2-story window. Mother said she about broke her neck getting down the stairs to see how I was. Daddy had dug up some metal pipes earlier that day - found the problem, covered the pipes up with a metal bucket, and went to get the needed part. If it had been any other day - no digging - Iris probably would have been hurt very much or died. She landed on the soft dirt from the hole and was fussing because she couldn't stand up. PTL!! God was in control. The family moved shortly after this to a house with normal windows.
When Iris was 5 or 6, she was at the Delta Swimming Pool. Everyone was going out to the middle of the pool to see a big round cement ring. She remembers walking along and then woke up with someone pushing on her chest to get the water out. Again, God saved her from death.
When Iris was 17, there was a big to do at the Baptist Church in Delta. She walked home from school, got the car, and went to the church. The kids studied awhile, then ate, and went to the sanctuary to hear a lady from Denver speak. Afterwards, several kids needed aride home, so Iris took them. It was early so they stopped at a stand and got some sodas and sat in the car. Then, Iris pulled out onto the highway and started down the road towards Montrose. When she reached the left-hand turn-off, she stopped to wait for an oncoming car. She looked in the rear view mirror and thought the car was coming fast. It went through her head - "What if they hit us!" She thought - "How silly, if you saw a car stopped on the road, you wouldn't hit it." The car coming towards us went by, Iris put her foot to the metal and started to turn. BLAM!! The car spun around and around. One cool-headed boy said, "It only went around once." He told us to get out of the car and we all exited with the right-hand doors. The front seat had came loose and the guy in the middle front seat hit his head on the left side window in the back. At the hospital, the doctor told Iris that if the drunks had hit the car square on the back of the car, all five teenagers would have been killed. God saved all of us!!
At the Baptist Church in Delta, there was a wonderful Sunday School teacher for the hight school group, Paul Sharp. The BYF high school group had wonderful Christian leaders, Roger & Bessie Blouch. Iris accepted the Lord and was baptized at the Delta Church the summer after her junior year at camp. Her and a friend started a Bible Club at the Delta High School her senior year. Iris was president. There were about 20 students who attended from at least 4 churches in town. Iris was told the club lasted about 10 years.
Iris attended first grade, first half of the third grade, and her Junior & Seniors years of school at Delta, CO She attend 2nd grade at LOM school, last half of the 3rd grade at Orchard Ave school, 4th - 6th grades at LOM school, 7th grade at GJ Jr Hi, 8th & 9th grades at the new OMMS, and 10th grade and graduated at Delta High School. She received a scholarship (tied for 4th in her class) to Mesa Jr. College in Grand Jct., CO. She met a friend and was invited to come to Chapel at Intermountain Bible College while attending Mesa. She started attending NECC on 23rd Street.
After graduating at Mesa with an Associate in Commerce, she worked a year as stenographer/clerk for the Delta CO. Welfare Dept. She saved her money and in the Fall of 1967 started school at Intermountain Bible College (IBC). She worked in the office and the library, and then became the secretary to the President of the College, Erskine E. Scates, Sr. Iris graduated with a Bachelors of Sacred Literature.
While at IBC Iris met a young man who left the back of the classroom to sit with her in the front row! He walked her out to her car when she closed the library at night. Their first date was the last picnic of the year. That summer Sherman Moore took her to Gallup, NM to meet his parents. When they returned, Sherman asked her to marry him. They planned a June 6,1970 wedding. In April, Sherm received his orders to report to Ft. Dix, NJ the end of April. Soooo - April 24, 1970 they were married by Pastor Bob Spindler at the Baptist Church in Delta, CO. Even though it was less than a week's notice, many people came and was a fun time.
Iris almost missed the wedding as she was named after her Aunt Iris. Mother told Daddy to go get Iris and take her to the church. He came and picked up Auntie Iris, leaving Iris Kay at Grandma's. Uncle Wayne said, "Don't you think we should go to the church?" Iris said, " Yes, I need to change clothes." All went well and we honeymooned in Montrose, CO. The couple were married an adventurous 55 years.
Sherman left Monday morning. April 27th for Ft. Dix, NJ. Iris kept working for Mr. Scates. Sherm came home over the 4th of July. The flight he was going to go back on was cancelled. He called his C.O. and after some yelling, was told to get to Ft. Hamilton, NY ASAP! All went well and he received 3 MOS - Clerk, Assistant to the Chaplain, and Howitzer Operator.
After a year or so, Sherman took a job at Pitkin Co Sheriff's Dept. as a Deputy and they traded in their trailer and got a more insulated one and loaded all their stuff in it and moved to El Jebel, CO . Iris stayed with several people and worked awhile at IBC going up on the weekends. Iris quit working and moved to El Jebel, CO in January of 1971. Then, Sherman worked a year for the Police Dept. at Carbondale, CO. Their first son, Steven, was born in Glenwood Springs, CO while Sherm was at Carbondale. They moved to New Castle, CO at Appletree Trailer Park where their second son, Robert, was born at Glenwood Springs, CO. During this time they attended the Glenwood Church of Christ. Iris taught Sunday School and attend the Ladies Bible Study Group.
Three or four weeks after Robert was born, they moved to college housing for Shermam to finish at IBC in 1980. They attended NECC again and Iris taught Sunday School for 5 year olds and then 1st graders. When NECC moved to Patterson Road, Iris was in charge of the early service for PreSchool Church along with a friend who was in charge of the late service. We each had about 20 3-5 year olds. She used her flannelgraph backgrounds she had painted to tell the Bible Stories, recorded her piano music for the groups to have songs to sing and also she had made cards for various songs - a shoe shaped one - "Do You Know O Christian, Your a Sermon in Shoes" and others. There were 20 teachers for the month - so you only had to miss regular church once a Sunday unless you needed a sub. It was so much fun!
Sherm was working for the Oxydental Mine. Not too long they moved into a new house in Clifton Village South where they stayed till 1986. Iris took 10 years off to raise the kids and also did some daycare. Sherman graduated from IBC in 1983 with a Bachelors of Ministry. He tried out for three churches, but they decided none of them would work for them. He then got a job with Union Oil where he worked several years. He finally got on at the VA Hospital in Grand Jct., CO and worked there as a Federal Police Officer and the last three years as a Boiler Operator.
The couple moved to Karen Lee Drive in 1986 where they stayed till Iris passed. Iris went to Mesa College to learn computers as she didn't think she could get a job without this knowledge. She started off with SOS and was assigned to the DOE Compound for MacTec as a helper with 2 depts. Finally, the Head of the Medical Office, Tim O'Malley, took a chance on Iris. She was his administrative assistant for several years. When he left, Iris took a position with the Construction Dept. and had other wonderful bosses - first Kris and then when the company changed hands she went upstairs and worked for Gary Baur in Construction. Her last job there was for Health & Safety. Iris enjoyed her time there.
Her next job was with the Human Resources Office at School District 51 admin. bldg. with Mark Zipse as her boss. She was the Sub Coordinator for the District. She had instruction classes for new subs. She went to a seminar to learn the computer program. She put in the jobs and the computer would either call specified subs or subs could look at available jobs and choose one. Iris had many subs and loved them all. Her boss allowed her to have a Thank You Picnic for the subs at the end of each year.
Her next job was with SOS and she went to a place where she called clients to see if they needed their incontinent supplies. Iris enjoyed this job also. There were several of other SOS gals. Then, the company went with another company and the SOS people were not needed. Her last job was at Comfort Care - Assisted Living & Nursing Home as Secretary. She started as full time, and slowly dwindled down to two days and doing some work at home. Was an easy way to ease into retirement!
On June 27, 2014 both Sherman and Iris retired. It has been interesting. In all her jobs, she strived to a witness for Jesus. In retirement she struggled awhile because she had no one to witness to. Then, she would pray that God would send people to Walmart that they could pray for or visit with and encourage. She started in 2019 to help with Good News Club at Clifton Elementary. It is an after school club where stories of Jesus and God are taught, songs sang, and games to play. Lately, she started sending birthday and anniversary cards to people in her church she knew. It gave her a time she could pray for them. They attended Appleton Christian Church for 20 - 25 years. Enjoyed the Ladies Bible Study, being with former IBC students and the rest of the congregation. Was always a joy to see their Christian friends and grow spiritually.
Iris would encourage you if you do not know Jesus, to find a Christian friend and ask them about accepting Jesus as your Savior or find a church that teaches accepting Jesus and being baptized - try Appleton Christian Church!! Accepting Jesus as your Savior is the only way to Heaven. In these times, you need to make your decision before it is too late!
