Jean Gates Stephens
Jean Gates Stephens passed peacefully into her Savior’s presence at 9:30 pm, August 17, 2018 under HopeWest Hospice Care.
She was born October 1, 1933 on Derby Mesa, CO to Albert Ewing Gates and Bettie (Hight) Gates. Jean grew up a cowgirl preferring to follow after her father every chance she got. The passion she had for riding horses continued throughout her life.
She and her high school sweetheart, James H. Stephens, were married December 6, 1953. They worked side-by-side ranching on Sweetwater Creek raising three caring daughters.
Together, they were active members of the Cattlemen’s Association – Jean held many local, state and national offices in Colorado Cowbelles and later Colorado and National Cattlewomen Association. She was a member of P.E.O. and served as Resident Council President of the Commons of Hilltop. Other attributes: excellent cook, gifted seamstress, talented artist and world traveler.
Jean is survived by brother William(Jan)Gates, sisters Janice(Jack)Muller, and Janet Mayne. Three daughters; Cindy Webb, Deborah(Richard)Burford and Lynn(Scott)Laramore; 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
The memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 25 at First Presbyterian Church, 3940 27 ½ Road, Grand Junction.
Memorial contributions may be made to HopeWest Hospice, 3090 N 12th St., Grand Jct. or First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are being conducted by Brown’s Cremation And Funeral Service. Condolences may be left at brownscremationservice.com
