Remembering Uncle John: A Life of Adventure and Service
John M. Devine, 77, passed away on October 3, 2024 while hiking in Aspen, Colorado. As quoted on his calendar for October, "I'm 78 and it's just something I've wanted to do". John was doing what he loved to do and his faithful dog Sophie at his side.
Uncle John's infectious enthusiasm and zest for life left an indelible mark on everyone he met. Growing up, he enjoyed bowling and wrestling and traveled the world as a military brat where he developed a taste for exploration and discovering his passions. After serving as an MP in the Army, he embarked on new adventures, ranching in Arizona and Wyoming where his love for the great outdoors and animals flourished.
Visiting his ranches was always a thrill for each of his nieces and nephews, with cattle, ATV's and horses offering endless excitement. Long before Yellowstone made ranching trendy, Uncle John was the quintessential cool rancher.
In the 80's, he traded his cowboy boots for a firefighting gear, working for BLM, bravely battling forest fires in Mack, Colorado amongst other destinations. John also found a deep connection with his faith and completed several mission trips with his church that continued for decades. His dedication to protecting the land and community was unwavering.
Throughout his journeys, Uncle John's love for adventure, faith, and family remained constant. He cherished camping, gardening, his German Shorthaired Pointers, and daily Bible readings. His church family adored him for his Sunday donut deliveries and steadfast service.
A devoted friend, brother and Uncle, John lit up every gathering with his presence and sense of humor. His legacy inspires us to embrace life's adventures, serve others, and hold dear our faith and loved ones. He will be missed, but his memory will continue to inspire and warm the hearts of all who knew him.
John is survived by his brother, Dan Devine, sister, Pat (Devine) Dixon, seven nieces and nephews and beloved dog Sophie. A Military Honors service will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado. Celebrations of Life will also be held in Denver, Colorado and Fruita, Colorado. Exact dates and locations will be announced at a later date.
