John Martin

February 12, 1936 — February 10, 2021

John Martin of Cedaredge went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, in
Grand Junction. He was 84. He was born to Chester and Olive Martin in Pueblo, CO, in
February 1936. He was a longtime resident of Paonia.
John leaves behind a beloved wife, Bertha Thatcher of Cedaredge. They were married in June
1998 in the mountains.
He has seven children from his first wife, Karen Nelson (deceased): Debbie and Robert
Stubblefield, Laurie Hice, Johnna M Brent Forster, Kerri & Bill Gaston, Jacki West, Johnny and
Karen Martin, and Teri and Larry Rose. He has 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren;
and several nephews and a niece.
John retired as a retail manager at Don's Market after 34 years of service. He was a
good-hearted soul with a great sense of humor. He enjoyed telling stories and jokes to see
people laugh. John loved hunting, fishing, camping, and he especially enjoyed being the camp
cook. He also enjoyed watching western shows. He will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Chester Martin in 1986; Olive Martin in 2006; first wife,
Karen Martin in 1992; sister, June Poolson in 2009; sons-in-law, Gene Hice in 1985, Ron Paes
in 2008, and Danny West in 2020.
Services for John will be held in the mountains in a couple of months so his wife can attend.
We would like to give a special thank you to HopeWest for the wonderful care they gave in this
difficult time.
