John Shettel grew up in Annville, a college town in the Pennsylvania Dutch country. He completed high school in Conway and Little Rock, Arkansas where his father was serving as U.S. army chaplain. He was educated at Lebanon Valley College, Hendrix College, Princeton Seminary and McCormick Seminary. He and Doris Lee met during his first year at Lebanon Valley College. Together they served as student pastor and teacher at a small chapel for quarry workers' families near Annville. Married on Christmas eve of 1946, they both then completed their studies at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. John was ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. at Pleasant Grove, New Jersey in 1951 and served the church 40 years, first as pastor until 1967 and then as synod educational consultant until his retirement in 1991. Churches served were at Pleasant Grove and Schooleys Mountain, NJ, Ridgway, PA, Glenshaw, PA and Wheeling, WV. Kittanning, PA was headquarters for his service to the Synod of the Trinity.
