Joyce Canright

June 15, 1938 — April 7, 2016

Joyce Carol Skogen Canright

(Nee Hutchinson)

June15,1938-April7,2016

Joyce was born June 15, 1938, in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, as the second of nine children, to John and Evelyn (Stolfus) Hutchinson. She spent her childhood in the surrounding area, eventually settling in Portage, Wisconsin. During her marriage to Charles Mc Mahon, her three daughters, Carla, Kay, and Patti were born. Through her union with Barry Skogen (deceased), she had her daughter, Tracy, and two sons, Michael (deceased infant), and Tony. Many years later, She married Bill Canright in Grand Junction, CO.

While in Portage, Joyce worked for a variety places, including Weyberg Shoe Factory, Fleetwood Trailers, and Atkinson’s Department Store. She also owned a dry cleaning business in Longmont, CO. During her marriage to Bill Canright, she traveled throughout the United States working for The Business Journal. It was during this time that Joyce acquired the skills of sales and marketing. After her divorce from Bill, she traveled around the United States working for various companies as a sales and marketing representative. Eventually she settled in Grand Junction, Colorado after her retirement.

She was passionate about her spirituality and had a true gift with people.  Her vivacity, light and sense of humor brought warmth and laughter to both strangers and those closest to her.  Known for her ease in frequent, and often lengthy, conversation with even total strangers, she was renowned for not holding back her opinion and had a knack for telling it like it is.  Joyce was a free spirit and loved the beach, the mountains, long road trips, arts and crafts, dancing, quilting, and reading a good book.  She could swing a hammer, fix the pipes, build a house, argue a good cause, and provide emotional support and guidance to those who needed it most.

Joyce is survived by her children, Carla (Don) Williams, Kay Clay, Patti (Phil) Wise, Tracy Holzer, and Tony Skogen. She is also survived by her sisters, Elaine (Dennis) Benson, Donna (Orin) Leege, Kay Dryer, Shari Chapell, Jacqueline Layke, brother, Jim Hutchinson, and seven grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, infant son, Michael, her sister, Patsy Loveland, brother, Dennis Hutchinson, and granddaughter, Jenifer Hartje.
