Larry Leroy Rose, 82, passed away November 28th Thanksgiving Day, 2024. He was born October 12th, 1942 in Mahaska Kansas to Lucille Burt Smith and Leroy Louis Rose.
Larry spent a lot of time living with his Granny and Pa on the farm in Kansas. They were the most influential people in his life. They taught him how to work hard and have fun. His Granny taught him how to throw a baseball and how to shoot a gun.
Larry volunteered and joined the United States Army. He was in the military for 6 years. He ranked as Sergeant in the Vietnam War. He received the Bronze Star for valor in LZ XRay. Battle of la Drang. Larry would never say, but he was truly a badass. He was always proud of being 1st Calvary. When he came home from the Vietnam war he married his first wife and had two sons. Larry Jr. and Clint. He also raised her two children as his own, Dennis and Debra.
Soon after his first son Larry Jr. was born he lost his arm at work in a conveyor belt. He never let it slow him down in any way. Three days after losing his arm he went shooting with a new Ruger single 6.
He became a welder after that. He owned a successful window business in Denver, and at the same time owned a restaurant in Idaho Springs called The Mother Lode. He also built a large home up by the Continental Divide between Central City and Idaho Springs.
In the 80's he ran the crew that rehabbed the Mt. Evans trail for a summer. His son Clint told him he missed him too much and Larry never left for long periods of time after. The family moved to Delta County Western Colorado. He owned and operated Western Painting up until he retired. He also completely remodeled an old farm house (the old blue house) outside of Hotchkiss.
Larry loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He taught all his boys how to hunt, track, and survive. He hunted mountain lions, raccoons, and bears with his hounds. They also hunted deer and elk. When he got older he'd go to hunting camp with his kids and grandkids.
He met his current wife Roxie and they proceeded to run wild and have fun. They'd go out dancing, fishing, and drive all over to see where the day would take them. He became a father and grandfather to Roxie's family.
Larry's personality depended on who you were. He was very outgoing and would talk to anyone. He was incredibly resilient and was the backbone to his families. He made the best of any situation. He taught all the kids to be strong, work hard, and see everything through to the finish. He was always a friend to the underdog. He always considered the people he loved. Larry was just a good, fun man.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Lucy. Grandchildren by his son Clint, Molly, Henry, Phoebe Rose. And his best friend Steve Thompson.
He is survived by the love of his life, wife, Roxie. Sons-Dennis (Shauna) Fastenow, Larry Rose Jr., Clint (Julie). And daughter Lisa (Vince) Lopez. He had 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be announced and held at a later date.
