Lawrence Leland Schafer, 78, of Grand Junction, passed away on January 8, 2021 at HopeWest after a brief illness.
Lawrence was born on August 5th, 1942 in Fruita, Colorado.
He was the son of Alex and Clara Schafer.
He attended school in Fruita, Colorado.
He was a veteran of the US Army, serving as a medic from 1962-1964. He was stationed at Ft. Detrick, Maryland.
He married his first wife, Carol R. Cannon, of Fredrick, MD in 1964, they had two children and later divorced.
He was a self-employed contractor, owning many businesses over his life. He was a glass glazier, builder, and excavator.
In later years he owned a garage door business.
He was a longtime member of the Eagles, The Moose and the VFW.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, building, and spending time with his family.
He was a jokester and enjoyed making people laugh.
He is survived by his wife, Karen K Schafer, married 14 years, they shared their life and love of travel and adventure. Lawrence is also survived by his son, Leland S. Schafer of West Virginia, his daughter Sandra K. Mason of West Virginia, one stepson, Dale Wright of Grand Junction, CO, one stepdaughter, Brenda Dexter of Cortez, CO, one brother, Dean Schafer of Sun City, Arizona, 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Urban, Richard, Laverne and sister, Barbara.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 AM, and military services will be held Friday at 1 PM.
