Mary Alice Smith was born in Geeley, CO on February 17, 1948, and passed away peacefully at HopeWest Hospice Care Center in Grand Junction, CO as a result of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). While growing up near the UNC campus in Greeley, she enjoyed making friends with children whose parents attended summer school and took part in the many activities provided to the community by the college students. Later, as a student at UNC, she met her future husband, Roger Smith. Their friendship strengthened when she transferred to mesa Junior College where Roger was employed in the college's Media Services Department.
They were married on August 10, 1969, in Greeley at the Congregational Church. In August, 1970, Mary and Roger moved to Denver, CO where she was employed as a clerk typist for the Colorado National Guard. She and Roger took advantage of the multitude of social opportunities in the Denver Community. They discovered the joy of camping and backpacking on the weekends. Camping became a life-long activity.
A few years later she was employed by the U.S. Department of Treasury as an Administrative Assistant. During that time she developed several deep friendships that continued throughout the rest of her life.
After her retirement, Mary and Roger moved back to Grand Junction. She enjoyed her retirement by going camping, taking day trips into the mountains, reading, gardening and becoming involved as a leader in the United Methodist Women's Association. She also participated in other social groups. Mary was highly skilled in developing meaningful programs and activities. She was much admired by those she led.
In July, 2015, she was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). As a result of ALS, her life was cut short and her passing is a loss to her family and community. We miss her greatly!
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Verdie Peddycord. She is survived by her brother and is wife, Clyde and louise Peddycord of Indianapolis, IN; her sister, Ellen Becker and her husband, Larry of Fort collins, CO; her sister, Ann Reichhardt and her husband, John, of Loveland, CO.
