Norma S. Upson, age 96 died in her sleep under Hospice care, following a long illness from strokes. Born in New Brittan Connecticut December 23 of 1919, she was the daughter of Orin and Lettie Smith.
She attended Northfield Mt. Herman School in Western Massachusetts. (http://www.nmhschool.org/about-nmh) With the outbreak of WW II, she married her lifelong friend, and suitor,
Robert A Upson. Following her homemaking duties in the raising of her two sons Bill and Daniel, she began her freelance writing career with several books published. She was a member of Denver Writer’s Guild. After moving to Portland Oregon, she was active in the Library Association, as well as various writers’ groups.
Norma very much enjoyed the out of doors, fishing, boating, and beachcombing with her husband, Bob. Ocean, with wide vistas and storms, the mountains and rivers of the N.W. were some of her favorite haunts. She was always available with a bit of humor, and loved word plays, puns, and had a great sense of the ironic. Having raised two sons, she always had time for her many friends across the United States, as well as locally.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her four older siblings, and her son Daniel. She has four grandchildren; Jessica, Seth, Kristen, and Emily.
At Norm’s request, no funeral services will be held, but a memorial gathering with family will take place at a later date.
