It is with great sadness that the family of Rego Edward Omerigic announce his passing on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at the age of 84.
Rego was born in Leadville, Colorado on October 8, 1936. He was raised in Leadville by his parents, Rego and Nellie Omerigic. While growing up, he enjoyed being outdoors, surrounded by the natural beauty of the high-altitude Rocky Mountains. He graduated from Leadville High School in 1955, upon which he joined the US Marine Corps where he served for 3 years.
He returned from the USMC back to Leadville where he worked at the Climax Mine. He had many jobs during his time there, but eventually went on to study how to become an electrician which became his main occupation.
On August 22, 1964, Rego married Katherine (Wadsworth) of Leadville. They were married for 57 years and raised 4 children together. As a family they enjoyed many camping trips, as well as fishing and hunting, where Rego taught them about his love of the outdoors. He was a family man who loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Upon retirement, Rego became especially interested in the management of Colorado water resources and laws. He studied water law and issues and served on the Board of Parkville Water for 14 years. He also served on the Colorado State Roundtable Commission as a representative for the Upper Arkansas Valley and was a cooperator on the Lake County Soil District for 7 years.
Rego was a strong, kind, loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. He was a life-long learner, often researching various topics including history, water conservation and mining. He enjoyed polka dancing, cherry Dr. Pepper and giving the greatest hugs to friends and family.
He will be missed by his wife Katherine, his sons, Rego A. (Denise) Omerigic of Westcliffe, and Brian (Bella) Omerigic of Grand Junction, and his daughter, Valerie (David) Omerigic-Sahyoun of Magdalena, NM, along with his 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Rego is preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa (Omerigic) Gibson.
