Richard Benton

September 7, 1945 — February 28, 2017

Richard Benton Son of Iris and Myron Benton, Dick Benton parted ways with this world February 28th after 71 years of making the most of life. He leaves behind two sons, R. Fox Benton of Carbondale CO, and Doug Riley (his children Ty and Tessa) of Louisville CO and his niece and nephew Kylie and Chase from Omaha Nebraska, children of his brother Jack. His beloved charcoal lab, Lucy was by his side to the end. Dick was born in Kansas, lived in Longmont CO, Boulder CO, Carbondale CO, Dothan Alabama and returned in 2013 to caretake his dad, Myron Benton. He found himself stranded here in Grand Junction CO from the years of living dangerously and from many of his very good friends in Alabama and his travels. He was a carpenter, a silversmith, and most of all a wordsmith. He often offered unsolicited observations that could be cringeworthy, half true and usually unwelcome. He could spot a fake and enjoy the exposure but he could unexpectedly offer gracious compassion and generosity. He loved music and musicians loved him. He had the sixth sense of his mother and the survival skill of his dad. He is proceeded in death by his siblings, Susan Benton and Jack Benton. He leaves two saintly ex-wives Patty and Tanya, and many beautiful and devoted women will miss him very much. Most of those who loved Dick Benton will not forget his merry-making and his loyalty to friends and family.
