Richard Ivan Weigand, age 78, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 07, 2023 following a lengthy battle with several illnesses caused by Agent Orange exposure.
Born June 5, 1944 in Rocky Ford, CO, he was the son of the late John Lawrence (Tim) Weigand and Irene Mildred McNeilly Weigand.
Richard attended Greely High School in Greeley, CO; Otero Junior College in La Junta, CO; and the University of Denver in Denver, CO.
He was a veteran of the Army having served as a 1st Lieutenant during the Vietnam War. On May 1, 1969, Richard was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations.
Richard worked as a realtor in Grand Junction, CO for many years. Prior to that he worked as a banker for a major Denver bank, managing the farm and ranch division. Agriculture was a passion for him in both his personal and professional life.
Richard was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various capacities within the church throughout the years. He enjoyed working with the Young Men’s organization and their “high adventure” outdoor activities.
Richard also served others through Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and the Church’s Addiction Recovery Program (ARP). During his 45 years of sobriety, Richard touched many lives by devoting much of his time to helping others find the tools they needed to also be sober.
He enjoyed the great outdoors by hiking –Mount Elbert for one, mountain biking, mountain climbing – including climbing Independence Monument, and four wheeling Colorado’s beautiful mountains.
Richard loved people and enjoyed helping them. He was an outgoing, generous, hardworking man who was dedicated to his family. He was the “best girl dad ever” and spent time with his daughters doing many different types of activities.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his older sister Barbara Cowan. He is survived by his spouse Susan, daughters Dani Weigand, Chandra Weigand, and Jacinda (Brandon) Wilkey, sister Pat Loven, nieces and nephews, and grandchildren.
Services will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 11 a.m. (2235 Kingston Rd, Grand Junction, CO 81507)
Internment and Military Honors will be held at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado promptly at 1 p.m. (2830 Riverside Parkway, Grand Junction, CO 81501)
