Robert Larry Martin, age 84, died January 2nd 2022, following a long fight with stomach cancer.
Born December 31st 1937 in Iola, Kansas, he was the son of the late Myrna and Donald Martin. He grew up in Humboldt, Kansas with his two older brothers, Charles Martin and Donald Martin Jr.
Larry graduated from the University of Kansas in 1962 with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering. Then he went on to graduate from the University of Colorado with a Master of Science degree in 1968.
Larry had been employed as an electrical engineer in the National Bureau of Standards in Bolder, Colorado, for five years. Afterwards he worked in the Computer Science Division at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, all the way until he retired in 1998.
Larry was President of the NIH Amateur (Ham) Radio Club. His callsign was W3IBO.
He enjoyed college basketball and was a huge Jayhawk fan. He loved to golf and went golfing every week with his friends. He was also into Amateur (Ham) Radio, installing his own antennas at his house and making thousands of calls to people all over the world. In his college years he’d drive his beetle around Boulder to find the best fishing spots. One of his prides and joys was his soft and luxurious lawn he maintained in Maryland for over forty years, it was the greenest grass out of the whole neighborhood.
Larry was quiet and reserved, yet dependable and charming. Making friends most places he went even while being an introvert, he just had a way of drawing people in. He was a devoted family man, strong willed with an undeniable soft spot for his loved ones.
He was very determined, pushing himself to his limits to do what he wanted despite the many obstacles thrown at him in life. He cared very deeply for his family and loved to go camping with his wife and kids.
