Roberta “Bert” McDaniel

Roberta Josephine McDaniel passed away at Larchwood Inns on June 23rd, 2021 in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Bert was born August 13th, 1926, in Grand Junction, CO. She was the oldest of nine children born to Robert and June Jenny Harvey Ottman, who lived in the Appleton Community.

She began school in 1932 at the Appleton Consolidated School. She attended Mesa State when it was a Junior College. While at Mesa State she met Robert Paul “Bob” McDaniel.

They were married in Grand Junction, September 26th,1947. They lived in Rifle until Bob was accepted to UCLA and so they made the move to California.

Roberta worked for Northrup Corp on a missile program as an administrative secretary. Bert and Bob traveled to Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. They divorced in 1989.

Bert moved back to Grand Junction in 2004 to be close to family and long time companion Pharel Green. She enjoyed living back in the Valley where she grew up. Bert volunteered at The Senior Companion Program, Meals on Wheels, The Grand Junction Library and with the Migrant Families in the valley.

Upon retirement her main hobbies were reading and adult coloring. She also became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for many years. Bert will be remembered by many as“ Strong Willed, Proper and Interesting “

Bert was preceded in death by her parents, sister Marty Maley; brothers, Nick, Thornton, Richard, Robert and infant Larry Ottman in addition to her long time companion Pharel Green.

She is survived by her children, Randy (Sheree ) McDaniel of Prescott, AZ and Rebecca McDaniel-Gates of Santa Fe NM; three granddaughters and four grandchildren.

She is also survived by the Ottman Family. Brothers, John Ottman of Twin Falls, ID and Leland (Arlene) Ottman of Palisade, CO. Sister-in-laws Hazel Buffington of Grand Junction and Betty Ottman of Prosser, WA; 14 nieces and 8 nephews.

Memorial Service will be held at Crown Point Cemetery at 10:00am on July 10th. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Mesa County RSVP or Mesa County Meals on Wheels.
