Willie Hammons was born October 20th, 1934, in Mountain Grove, Missouri to Bert and Mary Walker Hammons. He served 5 years and 3 months in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict on the USS Whetstone, an LSD, and almost 2 years in the Air Force in Texas as a jet engine mechanic. He spent 27 years working for the City of Arvada, Colorado as a street department crew chief and heavy equipment operator, with street sweeping, mowing, and snow removal duties. After retirement he worked another 10 years for North Jeffco Recreation District and again for Arvada's Vehicle Maintenance Shop, as a parts runner.
Willie is survived by his wife of 40 years, Paula Hammons, his sons, James Gautreaux of Houston, TX, Robert Ethridge of Howe, OK, Gary Hammons of Commerce City, CO, and Anthony Ames of Grand Junction, CO.
Willie was a life member of Arvada Elk's Lodge No. 2278, other memberships were the USS Whetstone Reunion Association and the Delta Trap Club. He enjoyed ATA and Annie Oakley Trapshooting at many trap clubs, as well as fishing, hunting, NASCAR and tying fishing flies.
He passed on March 28, 2021 at the VA Community Living Center in Grand Junction. Thank you to the wonderful staff there for their compassionate care.
Services will be on Monday, June 14, 2021 at 10:00 at the Veteran's Cemetery of Grand Junction.
