Wolfgang R Taylor, of Basalt Colorado passed away at the age of 64
Wolfgang was born in Kaiserlautern, Germany on March 6, 1955 and moved to the United States when he was 14 years old. He attended Cathedral High School in Denver and played soccer for the team. He then received his Bachelor's degree from Western State College in Gunnison, CO and attended on a full football scholarship as the team's kicker. In 2009, Wolfgang was inducted into the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame from Western State for finishing his kicking career with 237 points which set the all-time NCAA record which helped lead the Mountaineers to 3 RMAC titles from 1972-1975. He held the record for longest field goal of 57 yards.
After working in Gunnison at the Cattlemen's Inn and Three Thieves Steak House, he moved to the east coast where he continued to work in the food service business. He worked for Marriott Sodexo at the World Bank in Washington DC and then moved to Baltimore where he ran the food operation at the Baltimore Harbor Aquarium. While living in Baltimore, he was the Commissioner for the entire Belcamp soccer program and was a coach for his daughter's soccer team. He then followed his dream to open his own restaurant and moved back to his beloved mountains and owned The Stew Pot from 2003 to 2009 in Snowmass Village, Colorado. After a traumatic brain injury in 2006, he was unable to run the restaurant and sold the business in 2009. He continued to live in the Basalt area working for High Mountain Taxi and then for Gwyn's High Alpine Restaurant on top of Snowmass Village. He was also an umpire for the town's local baseball teams.
Wolfgang is survived by his Mother, Hannalore Furton and her husband John Furton from Fruita, Colorado. His daughter Nicole Myers and her husband Brandon Myers of Fairfax, Virginia, his ex-wife Cindy Taylor of Virginia Beach, Virginia, several nieces and a nephew and many other family members and friends.
Wolfgang loved his mountains, skiing, football and especially his favorite team the Raiders. He also loved playing golf, throwing horseshoes and swimming in the ocean. He was kind, passionate, loving and would give the biggest "bear hugs". He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. Rest in Peace "Wolfie". We love you.
