Sherrill Houghton Houston, 88, of Edwards, Colorado and Essex, New York passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, November, 6, 2017 from complications due to dementia and multiple myeloma. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary, and four children: Timothy of Bakersfield, California; Anne Breckheimer (Bret) of Eagle, Colorado; David (Jeanna) of Jacksonville, Florida; and Caroline Leonardo (Jeffrey) of Edwards, Colorado; and three grandchildren, Joseph and Gabrielle Leonardo and Frida Houston.
Sherry was raised in New Canaan, Connecticut. He attended Milton Academy and then received a degree in Geology from Harvard College in 1951. After OCS he served on the USS Botetourt during the Korean war. Following his Naval service, he enrolled at Columbia University, receiving his MBA in 1956. While in Canada starting his mining career, he met Mary, the sister of a workmate. In 1958, Sherry and Mary married and moved to the U.S. where he worked for mining and smelting concerns in New York, Connecticut, Missouri and California. The great joys of his life were his family, especially Mary, playing tennis and hockey, and of course spending summers in the Adirondack State Park in upstate New York. In 2006, Sherry and Mary moved to Colorado to be near their daughters. Winters in the Vail area and summer in the Adirondacks suited him very well.
A service will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2:00 pm by the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration at the Vail Interfaith Chapel, 19 Vail Road, Vail, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sherry's name can be made to:
